Sigh. XP is so stable you don't have to do anything 'drastic'. Just open task manager, click 'File > New task (Run)' and type explorer.exe in the box, click 'ok' and explorer will restart. No problem

explorer never crashed. nothing bad happened. I deleted explorer.exe in its entirety. My accident was thinking that windows would automatically ask me to insert the cd and reinstall explorer.exe. it didn't so I had to reinstall the whole dern thing. xp is very stable. I haven't had a single crash. Sometimes third party devices and software don't always work right, but thats where you learn more about windows.

begin mac rant:
If apple had as many third party apps and drivers as xp it wouldn't be nearly as stable as xp. Apples stability comes from its centralization of programs. that is why I don't like macs, they are built by apple for apple products. xp is built by microsoft for an incredible variety of other products including their own. In fact often I find microsofts own programs to be less stable then third party's.
end mac rant

Yes...it's a bit that way.  I'm losing track of just how many threads have recently been turned into some Mac/Anti-Mac crusade by a few with seriously blunt axes to grind.

What say everyone goes to just one thread and does their Apple bruising and non-PC-ing there and leave the rest of the community in relative peace.

....or at least stay on topic.  I believe we are talking about Explorer.exe going AWOL, which has exactly zip/nada/nil to do with Apple or Mac or OSX or any other permutation of the three.

Stow it.....

I exiled him, but then I wanted him back and he said "no" and ran off with his little friends. I got very sad and lonely without him and I had to get him back. Finally I went down to the explorer.exe store and got me another one.

T the C...you would only have needed to extract the explorer.exe from the CD, not re-install the lot....these days with burners, etc...you could have copied it from someone else's comp.....would have saved a boatload of time...
on Jan 19, 2004
Actually Explorer.ex_ is 351,519 so it'd easily fit on a floppy...

If you had a back-up, with something like Drive Image 7, you could have restored the file in seconds...
on Jan 19, 2004
I looked on the cd and couldn't find it. It was probably in one of the cabinet files, or I didn't look hard enough

I wish I had a backup. but its all over now and everything is back to normal. Reinstalling windows was just an hour out of my life.

T the C...it's in the i386 directory....right after...exe2bin.ex_ and right before extrac32.ex_....
